The 2015 and 2016 heroes of the Betfred TV Summer Hurdle are engaged in this year’s contest, while It’s A Gimme bids to win the £50,000 Betfred Summer Plate three years after claiming the prize under the now retired Sir Anthony McCoy.
Betfred Summer Plate & Lincs FM Ladies’ Day is the showpiece meeting of jump racing in Britain every summer.
In the Listed hurdle race – the second contest on Saturday’s card – the Dan Skelton-trained Red Tornado who was victorious 12 months ago is joined by the 2015 winner Gran Maestro. Putting up a big challenge to them could be John Constable, winner of the Swinton Hurdle at Market Rasen’s sister Jockey Club racecourse at Haydock Park two months ago.
Curious Carlos, sixth in the two-mile race last summer, could be the ride of Market Rasen Racecourse ambassador, teenage jockey Sean Bowen.
Seventy minutes later the 19-year-old is likely to be in the saddle on Earthmoves in the Listed Betfred Summer Plate. The horse will go into the race after a victory at the Lincolnshire track last month.
Another recent Market Rasen winner among the 23 entries is I’dliketheoption, while trainer Nicky Henderson’s Days Of Heaven is going for four wins on the bounce.
Dan Skelton sent out the winners of both these major races in 2016 and he is set to be represented in the track’s most valuable race – run over two miles and five furlongs – by Shelford.
Elsewhere on the card, which gets under way at 1.35pm, Rouge Devils – part-owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson – is entered in the Betfred Mobile Novices’ Handicap Chase.
There is plenty of other entertainment on Saturday in addition to the racing.
Visitors can enter the style awards for ‘best dressed lady’. There are great prizes to be won and the judging panel includes the racecourse’s ‘Face of Ladies Days’, Megan Grundy. Style spotters will be out in force selecting ladies to compete in the coveted final with fantastic prizes to be won. The final will take place in the Winners Enclosure at 3.30pm.
Nor is there any need for spectators to rush away at the end of the afternoon because Lincs FM will be holding an Après Racing party following the last race.
Nadia Powell, General Manager, Market Rasen Racecourse, says:
“Betfred & Lincs FM Ladies’ Day featuring the Summer Plate, the racecourse’s richest and most prestigious raceday’s of the year, in the middle of summer is always one of our most popular occasions. We are delighted with the horses entered, especially for the two Listed races, and we’re set for a great day’s racing.”
Tables are available to be booked in the beautifully refurbished Brocklesby Suite Restaurant, to include a reserved table for the day, a three course a la carte meal followed by Market Rasen’s afternoon tea.
All three enclosures – County, Tattersalls and Lawn – will be open, giving race-goers a choice of where to watch the races and enjoy refreshments.
The County Enclosure has several bars and places to eat in a friendly atmosphere, including the County Bar with great views or a table in the Brocklesby Suite Restaurant.
Within the Tattersalls Enclosure, visitors watch the horses as they parade and get up close to the winners. There are various bars and eateries, including the tote Exacta Bar and Red Rum Bar.
A fun family day out can be enjoyed in the Lawn Enclosure. Bring a picnic.
There is something for all ages - along with views of the parade ring, there is a playground for children, free children’s entertainment and the Victor Lucas Bar for the grown-ups.
A restricted amount of alcohol per person can be brought into the Lawn Enclosure and Lawn/Willingham Picnic Car Parks – four unopened cans (any content) per person, two small plastic bottles of wine per person, half a bottle of wine per person (bottles must be plastic). Bottles of spirits are not permitted, nor are glass bottles of wine/champagne/prosecco or unsealed bottles. No alcohol can be brought into either the Tattersalls or County Enclosures.
