Racecourse’s Horseplay leads to national recognition

Market Rasen Racecourse’s ‘Horseplay Sunday’, when visitors were able to get up close and personal to the Grand National winner, is winning national recognition.

The event, staged in May this year, is one of five candidates for a ‘Love of the Sport’ award next month – coincidentally being hosted at Aintree, the home of the Randox Health Grand National.

Neptune Collonges, the first grey horse for over 50 years to win the world’s greatest steeple chase, was among the well-known equine names in a parade of former racehorses at the Lincolnshire racecourse.

The ‘Horseplay Raceday’ was an event featuring fantastic sport, education and fun, including show jumping and dressage with a side-saddle display. The real-life version of Market Rasen Racecourse’s mascot, Gerald the Appaloosa, and his friend Perkin the Shetland pony were also on track.

Education charity Racing to School provided behind-the-scenes tours, including trips to the start of races, inside the weighing room and in the parade ring. Lincolnshire farrier Evan Williams showcased his skills, while children tried their luck on a racehorse simulator.

To cap it all, the racecourse opened its new Neigh and Play Garden.

As a result, the racecourse is now a finalist in the Showcase & Awards, organised by the Racecourse Association, the trade body of Britain’s racecourses, on 8th November. The ‘Love of the Sport’ award celebrates initiatives that both enrich and extend the reach of the sport. Contenders demonstrated the passion, enthusiasm, knowledge and skill of those who work tirelessly in the sport, enhancing both customer enjoyment and education of racing.

Nadia Powell, General Manager, Market Rasen Racecourse, said:

“Our Horseplay Raceday in May was a hugely successful event and really caught the imagination of visitors of all ages. We are delighted that its popularity has been recognised by the judges of the horse racing industry’s Showcase & Awards 2018 and we look forward to the awards night at Aintree Racecourse next month.”

*Coming up next at Market Rasen Racecourse is Winter Ladies’ Day, sponsored by Elixir Bathrooms of Lincoln, the second half of the venue’s ‘Autumn Double’, on Saturday, 20th October. More details can be found at www.marketrasenraces.co.uk.
